Nevada Real Estate
Nevada is a state located in the west central United States. Arizona, California, Idaho, Oregon and Utah all border on Nevada. As of 2005, this state, also known as “The Silver State” or “The Sagebrush State”, had an estimated population of 2,414,807 residents. The official state slogan is “The Battle Born State”.
True to the phrase on its flag, Nevada was “Battle Born”. Modern day Nevada is the result of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that officially put an end to it. As outlined in the treaty, the Mexican government would cede 1.36 million square kilometers in exchange for approximately 18.25 million dollars. This cession included parts of present day Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming, as well as all of California, Nevada and Utah. In 1850, the U.S. Congress included Nevada in the establishment of the Utah Territory.
In 1859, gold and silver were discovered at Comstock Lode and with that discovery came Nevada ’s gold rush. Between the years of 1860 and 1870, Nevada ’s population grew from 6,857 to 42,941, an in crease of over 500%. Nevada separated from the Utah Territory on March 2, 1861 and took the name Nevada . The name Nevada is short for Sierra Nevada , or “snowy range” in Spanish. Nevada became the 36th state admitted into the union on October 31, 1861.
Nevada came to be because of gold and silver mining and continued to prosper from it until around the 1920s. However, with the rapid decline in mining in this area in the 1920s and the drop in agricultural production during the Great Depression, Nevada had to come up with another source of revenue. With approval from the state legislature, Nevada legalized gambling in 1931 as a way of compensating for the drop in mining. This audacious move proved to be a winner, because until today legalized gambling is the driving force in Nevada ’s economy. And, as they say, the rest is history.
