Summerlin Center

Summerlin Center To Set New Standard

Summerlin’s new commercial core, to be completed by 2009, will offer shopping and services on a scale larger than anything to date in the Las Vegas Valley. The development, called Summerlin Center, will occupy 400 acres south and east of the new Red Rock Resort, with a 1.2 million foot open air shopping center, an office district, a four star hotel with conference facilities, and a civic center for concerts and community events. The high-density development also calls for two high-rise condo towers, and a housing neighborhood, offering thousands of upscale homes to complete this exciting urban village.

The high-density vision for Summerlin Center won’t come at the cost of livability and street-level community, either. Although it’s approved for building heights of 250 feet, Summerlin Center’s developer, the Howard Hughes Corp, is adhering to a self-imposed building height limit of 198 feet. The policy will help ensure a more integrated residential and commercial environment, without large parts of the development sequestered into stand-alone skyscrapers.

Summerlin Center’s progressive, community-oriented approach has prompted many comparisons to The District at Green Valley, which set the previous standard for urban village design in Las Vegas with its highly successful mix of shops and housing. But Summerlin Center will be at least five times as big as The District. At 400 acres, it will feature a range of retailers and amenities that simply aren’t available elsewhere.

Several top Las Vegas architects and consulting firms are working in Summerlin Center, to help ensure aesthetic success and functionality. When this development opens in 2009, it’s guaranteed to be a jewel of the Las Vegas area.
